Bonnet by Philip Treacey, 1997

Caps, scarves, berets, trilbys, bowlers, boater, top hats, nightcaps, coifs, bonnets: there are over 1500 hats in the Fashion Museum collection. The earliest pieces are embroidered coifs or forehead cloths worn by women at very end of the 16th century. The most up-to-date (already from over 10 years ago) is an asymmetric bonnet by hat designer Philip Treacey, from his autumn / winter collection 1997.

This bonnet by Philip Treacey from 1997, and the ‘stepped’ navy blue and cream plaited straw hat by Christian Dior from the late 1940s are both currently on display in the Fashion Museum galleries.

Other milliners or hat designers whose work is in the collection include Simone Mirman, Aage Tharup, Frederick Fox, Claude St Cyr and Agnes.

A selection of hats from the collection is on display in the Fashion Museum galleries.
