Helmut Lang
Helmut Lang collection on show at the Fashion
Museum
April 2010
Helmut Lang has generously donated a
collection of his work in fashion from 1997 to 2005 to Bath &
North East Somerset Council’s Fashion Museum. Twenty five of the
ensembles will be on display at the Museum from 1 May 2010.
The display will include fashions from both
Spring/Summer and Autumn Winter collections. Highlights from the
women's wear are sheer layered dresses, surf inspired looks and a
hand-pleated deep midnight blue silk evening dress with panels of
horsehair. The featured menswear include Lang’s signature suit worn
with military inspired hanging chaps and monochrome ensembles
paired with holsters and straps.
Manager of the Bath & North East Somerset
Council run Fashion Museum, Rosemary Harden commented:
“This is such an exciting day for the Fashion
Museum. As well as historic dress, we want to share the best
international contemporary fashions with our visitors. The
influence that Austrian born fashion designer Helmut Lang has had
on fashion in the last three decades is undeniable. His simple,
elegant and urban clothing has been a quiet and yet powerful thread
running through the development of fashion since the 1980s. He is
undoubtedly one of the great names of modern fashion, and we are so
excited therefore that his work should be part of the collection
and on display at the Fashion Museum in Bath”.
Long time Helmut Lang fan, award-winning
fashion writer Iain R Webb who has co-curated the display at the
Fashion Museum commented:
“Helmut Lang provided a vision of the future
that was practical yet graceful. His body of work is as relevant
now as they were during his career in fashion. Although Mr.
Lang retired from fashion in 2005 and is now working as an artist,
the clothes he designed for three decades still appear modern.
Through a perfect mix of utility and modernity, Lang introduced
unconventional materials into the fashion urban uniform and defined
the silhouette for the 90’s. His work left an undeniable imprint in
contemporary tailoring and his influence continues to reverberate
among the fashion community today.”
The display at the Fashion Museum will
continue until the end of the year. More information can be found
